Nature called. We answered.
Green-powered:
BOPI has entered into a special program with our energy provider, we exclusively use power produced with the sustainable resources of wind, sun, or biomass (bio-mass is energy from methane gas emitted from landfills). In addition to using sustainable power, 5% of the cost is donated to “green initiatives” in the local community. As printing is a power intensive industry, this initiative will be a major contribution to those local programs.
Paper:
BOPI recently became certified by the Forest Stewardship Council. The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is a non-profit organization devoted to encouraging the responsible management of the world’s forests. FSC sets high standards to ensure forestry is practiced in an environmentally responsible, socially beneficial, and economically viable way.
This certification recognizes BOPI’s promotion of the use of paper products that originate from FSC certifiable renewable forests. Stewardship of the product from logging through to printing must be carried out by FSC certified companies.
With all paper and print products utilized we focus both on recyclability and on environmental sustainability. Any excess paper is recycled, used as packing material, or donated to schools for class projects.
Building Practices:
Energy Optimization System: In addition to using sustainable power, we continue our efforts to reduce our power consumption whenever we can. Recently we have made a substantial investment of nearly $100,000 in multiple Power Factor Correction Capacitors (we call them smoothing units) for all our large electric equipment within our production facility. These units smooth the power supply and provide our machinery with the power it needs rather than allowing machinery to use excess power when the supply peaks. The Energy Optimization System consists of several modular components installed in our electrical system that work together to reduce energy usage and in addition provide our equipment with very high levels of surge protection. We expect that by utilizing these smoothing units we will reduce our power consumption by at least 15%.
Facility Roof: BOPI recently replaced the roof on our bindery department building. Materials were specifically chosen to reflect heat in the summer and insulate the building in the winter. The result is that the roof of this building is now white instead of the traditional black.
Inks:
BOPI is now using new “Eco Inks”; these consist of 99% vegetable oils with VOC emissions close to zero. These new environmentally friendly inks use more bio-based and renewable resources than the previous soy based inks. Our new “Eco Ink” is virtually free of all heavy metals. That includes lead which is very important given the lack of standards with inks produced in the Far East. In addition, our ink partner has great pride in being an environmental company by using waste ink to repurpose into the production of various colors, generate power and create concrete and asphalt.
Whether it is seeking eco-friendly processes or consulting with our clients on the most environmentally-friendly printing practices, BOPI is committed to making a positive impact on the environment and our world. We are an earth-conscious company and take the steps necessary each day to be good environmental citizens.
